Pilates

Pilates is a physical fitness system that was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates to build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening and strengthening the body. Each exercise incorporates the key principles of Pilates – postural alignment, breathing, core stability, controlled movement, flexibility and body awareness.

Practicing Pilates on a regular basis will improve posture, muscle coordination and movement and relieve pain and discomfort. Pilates can also be used to rehabilitate injury and facilitate sports specific strengthening and conditioning.

Pilates Mat Work

Pilates mat work is the basis for the entire Pilates system of exercises. In general, a traditional Pilates mat class will work your legs, stomach, lower and upper back muscles. On the mat, your body weight provides resistance against gravity, making the workout more challenging in many cases. They are low-impact and ideal for clients who are new to exercise, injured or rehabilitating an injury.

The mat floor exercises may also be combined with other props such as weights, balls, thera-bands and rings

Pilates Reformer

The Pilates reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment which looks like a bed with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes and pulleys. The origins of the Pilates reformer date back to the original Pilates studio in New York in the 1920’s and was designed by Joseph Pilates himself.

The Reformer provides both an intense and dynamic workout. Each exercise uses bodyweight and spring resistance; allowing the body to move through a greater range of motion. It is ideal for building, lengthening and strengthening the body as well as increasing the stability of the joints. The reformer exercises may also be combined with other props such as weights, ball, thera-bands, rings, boxes and trapeze
